Assignment 3 2026
Unique number:
Due date: 29 July 2026

QUESTION 1

1.1 Safety and Risk Aspects

Immediate Health Risk to the Baby

The baby faces an urgent health danger because malnutrition and dehydration can
become life threatening very quickly in a child who is only six weeks old. The baby
may have received too little milk, while unsafe formula preparation or extended
periods between feeds may have made the condition worse. Dehydration can affect
blood circulation, kidney function and normal body processes, while continued poor
nutrition may delay physical growth and brain development (World Health
Organization, 2024). The nurse must therefore arrange immediate medical
assessment, stabilisation and close observation before the baby leaves the clinic.

, QUESTION 1

The baby should not return home until health workers are satisfied that feeding can
continue safely and that a responsible caregiver understands the feeding instructions
(World Health Organization, 2023).

Mental Health and Personal Safety of the Mother

The mother is also a child because she is sixteen years old, which means that she
needs care while carrying the demanding responsibility of raising a newborn baby.
Her emotional breakdown, postnatal depression and feelings of being overwhelmed
may reduce her concentration, energy and ability to recognise the baby’s needs on
time (National Department of Health, 2024). A direct and respectful assessment
must explore sadness, hopelessness, sleeping difficulties, thoughts of self-harm and
any fear that she might harm or abandon the baby. Postnatal depression should not
be treated as laziness or poor parenting because it is a health condition that can
improve through counselling, family support and suitable clinical treatment.
Untreated depression may weaken the bond between mother and baby and increase
the possibility of further feeding problems or emotional withdrawal (National
Department of Health, 2023).
