Disaster Management Cycle helps to manage and reduce the impact of disasters through six important stages,
ensuring that communities can prepare, respond, and recover effectively.
Definition of Disaster
A disaster is an event that causes great harm, damage, or loss. It may disrupt daily life, cause injury or death, and
damage property. Disasters can be natural or human-made.
Types of Disasters
1. Natural Disasters: These are caused by natural forces.
Earthquakes
Floods
Hurricanes
Wildfires
Tornadoes
Volcanic eruptions


2. Human-Made Disasters: These are caused by human activities or negligence.
Industrial accidents (chemical spills, nuclear accidents)
Oil spills
Terrorist attacks
Wars or conflicts
Pollution disasters


Meaning of Disaster Management
Disaster management is the process of preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters. It involves
actions to reduce the risks, protect lives and property, and help communities recover as quickly as possible after
a disaster. The goal is to reduce the harm caused by disasters and make communities safer.


The 6 Stages of the Disaster Management Cycle
The disaster management cycle consists of six stages, each contributing to managing disasters more effectively.

5. Mitigation (Long-Term Risk Reduction)
What it is: Mitigation involves long-term actions to reduce the risks and prevent future disasters.

property, and the environment. These events are beyond human control but can be managed with preparation and
awareness.
Definition:
A natural disaster is a catastrophic event caused by natural forces, such as the Earth's movements, weather
patterns, or biological factors, that results in significant damage or loss.

Types of Natural Disasters:-

, 1. Geological Disasters
These are caused by processes beneath or on the Earth's surface.
Examples:
Earthquakes: Sudden shaking of the ground due to tectonic plate movements (e.g., 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake,
Japan).
Volcanic Eruptions: Emission of lava and ash from a volcano (e.g., Mount St. Helens eruption, USA).
Landslides: Rapid movement of soil and rocks down a slope (e.g., 2013 Uttarakhand landslides, India).
