Character Overview

The name Blanche means ‘white’ in French, creating an ironic contrast between her
idealised image of purity and the darkness of her past. Williams uses Blanche as a symbol of
a woman attempting to preserve an illusion of innocence and refinement despite the trauma
and loss that have shaped her identity.

Blanche is a deeply complex and tragic character who exists between fantasy and reality.
She is presented as emotionally fragile and psychologically traumatised, using illusion,
performance, and appearance as methods of self-protection. Her obsession with
maintaining her youth, beauty, and social status reflects her inability to accept the harsh

iry
realities of her life.

Her excessive behaviour — including her dependence on alcohol, frequent bathing, vanity,
and desperate search for unconditional love — reveals her attempts to cleanse herself
emotionally and escape feelings of guilt and shame. The recurring motif of bathing

Fa
symbolises her desire for renewal and purification.

Blanche often dominates conversations and performs exaggerated versions of herself,
revealing her desire to control how others perceive her. Her tendency to redirect attention
towards her own experiences and seek reassurance highlights her insecurity and desperate
need for validation. Williams presents Blanche’s theatricality as both a flaw and a coping
mechanism, demonstrating how she uses performance to protect herself from painful
ry
realities.

Blanche’s frequent search for compliments reflects her dependence on external validation,
particularly from men. Her fixation on her appearance and desirability reveals the limited
ra

value placed on women within her society, where femininity is closely tied to youth, beauty,
and sexual attractiveness.

Blanche's vulnerability stems from a history of significant trauma. She witnessed the decline
te

of her family, experienced the loss of Belle Reve, the DuBois family estate, and suffered the
suicide of her young homosexual husband, Allan Grey. These experiences caused her
relationship between desire and death to become deeply intertwined, influencing her later
Li

relationships and her dependence on male validation.

Once a respected Southern woman and schoolteacher, Blanche is forced into dependence
on her sister Stella after losing both her social position and financial security. Through
Blanche, Williams explores the decline of the traditional Southern aristocracy and the
vulnerability of women within a society that values them primarily for youth, beauty, and
sexual desirability.
