DUE DATE: 27 JULY 2026

SECTION A

Question 1

1.1 Define the role of tone and intonation in effective listening. (10)

In the context of effective listening and communication, tone and intonation serve as

critical paralinguistic cues, which are non-verbal elements of speech that alter or

enhance meaning. While spoken words convey the literal or denotative message, tone

and intonation provide the emotional, structural, and contextual framework necessary

for a listener to achieve full comprehension.

Tone refers specifically to the emotional quality, modulation, or attitude expressed

through the speaker's voice, such as warmth, sarcasm, urgency, or defensiveness. For an

effective listener, decoding the speaker’s tone is vital because it reveals the speaker's

true intent, feelings, and psychological state (Machingambi 2020). For instance, a

speaker saying "That is just great" can mean two entirely opposite things depending on

whether the tone is enthusiastic or sarcastic. Effective listeners must listen beyond the

vocabulary to capture these emotional undercurrents, ensuring they do not misinterpret

the message.

Intonation is the melodic variation of pitch in spoken language, characterized by the

rising and falling of the voice during speech. Intonation serves several structural

functions that guide the listener's understanding. First, it dictates grammatical structure,

where a rising pitch at the end of a sentence typically signals a question, whereas a

falling pitch signals a statement or command. Second, intonation handles informational

, focus. By placing vocal emphasis or a higher pitch on a specific word within a sentence,

a speaker can alter the entire meaning of the statement.

For listening to be genuinely effective, the receiver cannot rely solely on passive hearing.

They must actively synthesize these auditory signals. Recognizing changes in pitch and

vocal quality allows the listener to manage conversational turn-taking, identify implicit

or hidden meanings, and respond with appropriate empathy (Steinberg 2018).

Ultimately, tone and intonation bridge the gap between literal syntax and actual human

intent, making them indispensable components of decoding verbal messages accurately.

1.2 What is formal and informal language? (5)

Language registers vary depending on the social context, purpose of communication,

and relationship between the speakers.

Formal language is a register used in serious, official, academic, or professional contexts.

It adheres strictly to traditional rules of grammar, syntax, and sentence structure. It is

characterized by an objective, impersonal, and detached tone, typically avoiding first-

person pronouns in favor of third-person perspectives. Furthermore, formal language

utilizes precise, sophisticated vocabulary and completely avoids colloquialisms,

contractions, and slang (Du Plessis 2022). Its primary purpose is to convey information

clearly, logically, and respectfully, maintaining a professional distance between the

communicator and the audience.

Informal language is the register utilized in casual, personal, and familiar settings. It is

conversational in nature and is used when communicating with peers, friends, family, or

individuals where there is an established close relationship. Informal language is highly

subjective and emotional, frequently employing contractions, slang, abbreviations, and

idioms. The sentence structures are often shorter, spontaneous, and may not always
