About This Practice Exam
This practice examination is designed to help candidates prepare for the Minnesota Special Engineer's Boiler
License exam administered through the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI). It is organized into six
sections covering the core knowledge areas typically tested: boiler ratings and definitions, license scope and
statutes, low and high pressure classification, safety devices and controls, steam boiler systems, and hot
water/combustion fundamentals.
Each question is immediately followed by the correct answer and a short rationale explaining the underlying
principle. Candidates are encouraged to cover the answer and rationale, attempt each question independently,
and then check their response before moving on.
This guide is a study aid based on publicly available Minnesota boiler statutes, rules, and commonly tested exam topics.
Always confirm current requirements directly with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, as rules and fees
are subject to change.

Section 1: Boiler Definitions, Ratings & Horsepower

Q1. For the purpose of rating boiler horsepower for an Engineer's License, how many square feet of
heating surface are equivalent to one boiler horsepower on a conventional boiler?
Answer: 10 square feet of heating surface.
Rationale: Minnesota Rules use 10 sq. ft. of heating surface per boiler horsepower for conventional boilers when
determining the license class required for a plant.

Q2. For steam coil type boilers, how many square feet of heating surface equal one boiler horsepower
for licensing purposes?
Answer: 5 square feet of heating surface.
Rationale: Steam coil (and similar high heat-transfer) boilers are rated at 5 sq. ft. per horsepower, reflecting their
more efficient heat transfer compared to conventional fire-tube or water-tube designs.

Q3. What is the definition of 'boiler horsepower' most relevant to licensing decisions?
Answer: A standardized unit used to classify plant size and determine the class of engineer's license required
to operate it.
Rationale: Boiler horsepower is not simply an output rating; it is the statutory yardstick regulators use to match
plant capacity to the required license class.

Q4. What is a 'boiler' as defined under Minnesota boiler rules?
Answer: A closed vessel in which water or other liquid is heated, steam or vapor is generated, or steam is
superheated, under pressure, for use external to itself.
Rationale: The definition centers on a closed, pressurized vessel producing heated fluid or steam for use outside the
vessel itself — this distinguishes boilers from simple water heaters exempted elsewhere in statute.

Q5. What does the term 'appurtenance' refer to in boiler regulation?
Answer: Equipment that is integral to the safe operation of a boiler, such as safety valves, gauges, and
controls.
Rationale: Appurtenances are not the boiler itself but attached safety and control equipment necessary for safe
operation and inspection.

Q6. Who is generally recognized as a 'chief engineer' under Minnesota rules?
Answer: The highest-ranking licensed engineer responsible for the overall safe operation of a boiler plant.
Rationale: The chief engineer holds ultimate responsibility for plant operation, staffing of shift engineers, and
compliance with applicable safety codes.

Q7. What is meant by a 'shift engineer'?
Answer: A licensed engineer who is in responsible charge of a boiler plant during an assigned shift.
Rationale: A shift engineer may be a Special Engineer or higher classification, depending on plant horsepower, and
is directly responsible for operation during their shift only.

Q8. What governs the frequency and manner of boiler attendance checks?
Answer: Plant size, condition of boilers and appurtenances, maintenance history, occupancy of the building,
and operating/weather conditions.
Rationale: Minnesota Rules require attendance schedules to reflect real operating risk factors rather than a single
fixed interval for every plant.

Q9. What is a 'hobby boiler' under Minnesota rules?
Answer: A small boiler operated for non-commercial, personal, or exhibition purposes, subject to reduced
minimum attendance requirements.
