What is the SHSAT?
The SHSAT stands for the Specialized High School Admissions Test, where many NYC students take
each year to get into the top schools in the city, known as specialized high schools. It is an extremely
rigorous test that requires rigorous tutoring.
What are the 8 specialized high schools?
Stuyvesant High School (Manhattan)
The Bronx High School of Science (Bronx)
Brooklyn Technical High School (Brooklyn)
Staten Island Technical High School (Staten Island)
The Brooklyn Latin School (Brooklyn)
High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College (Manhattan)
High School of American Studies at Lehman College (Bronx)
Queens High School for the Sciences at York College (Queens)
What is composed in the SHSAT?
The 2026 SHSAT, it is now a computer-adaptive digital exam with two sections: English
Languages Arts and Mathematics.
Students are given 3 hours, 6 hours those with certain accommodations.
Since it’s adaptive, the difficulty of the questions changes based on the student’s performance.
There are 100 total questions, 50 questions for each section
Calculators are not allowed
The ELA section contains reading compression questions with passages and revising and editing
skills
The math section contains 5 grid in questions where it is not multiple choice and the other 45
questions are multiple choice where it covers algebra, geometry, arithmetic,statistics, and word
problems
, For the math portion, once you submit a question, you cannot go back
For the ELA portion, once you submit a reading passage set, you cannot go back
There will be TEIs, such as drag and drop, graphing tools, select multiple choices, and inline
dropdowns
