, TMN3704 ASSIGNMENT 3 2026

DUE DATE: 8 JULY 2026

ACTIVITY 1

1.1 Define the concept of 2D shapes. (2)

Two-dimensional (2D) shapes are flat geometric figures that have only two dimensions,
namely length and width, with no thickness or depth. They are enclosed by straight or
curved lines and can be identified and classified according to their properties, such as
the number of sides, vertices (corners), and angles (Department of Basic Education
(DBE), 2011; Van de Walle, Karp & Bay-Williams, 2019).

1.2 Identify and explain any two key concepts from the definition of 2D shapes. (4)

Dimension

A dimension refers to a measurable direction or extent of a shape. Two-dimensional
shapes possess only length and width, meaning they occupy a flat surface without
depth or thickness. This distinguishes them from three-dimensional (3D) objects, which
have length, width, and height. Understanding dimensions enables learners to
differentiate between plane figures and solid objects while developing spatial reasoning
and geometric reasoning skills (DBE, 2011; Van de Walle et al., 2019).

Angles

An angle is formed when two sides meet at a common endpoint called a vertex. Angles
are essential for identifying and classifying two-dimensional shapes because different
polygons have specific angle properties. In Grade 5, learners are expected to recognise
and describe right angles (90°), angles smaller than right angles (acute angles), and
angles greater than right angles (obtuse angles). A sound understanding of angles helps
learners compare, classify, and describe geometric figures accurately while laying the
foundation for more advanced geometry concepts (DBE, 2011; Jones & Mooney, 2003).

1.3 Carefully study the CAPS document and answer the following questions.

1.3.1 In which term(s) is the topic Properties of 2D Shapes taught in Grade 5? (2)
