This is an OCR A Level Religious Studies Philosophy of Religion essay stem on the Ontological Argument, designed to help you build full 40-mark answers. Written by myself, I used this for my A level exams as a stem to build essays from on this topic, achieving grade A. It covers Anselm’s original argument from the Proslogion, including the idea of God, and the claim that God must exist necessarily. It also includes key supporting and critical viewpoints from thinkers like Gaunilo (Perfect Island objection), Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, and Plantinga. The material is set out in a way that makes it easy to turn into full essays, with clear arguments and counterarguments you can expand in your own words. It’s mainly aimed at helping with exam revision, essay planning, and improving structure for OCR A Level Religious Studies (H573), especially for Philosophy of Religion questions on the Ontological Argument.

Ontological arguments
OCR A-level religious studies

Ontological arguments claim that we can prove God's existence simply because it is in his nature to
exist; existence is a predicate of God, and therefore it is impossible for him not to exist. These are a
priori arguments, based on reason without the need for evidence.

Anslem put forward his ontological argument in his book ‘Proslogian’. His work was based on a belief
that faith precedes understanding, and so an understanding of God is a consequence of a belief in
him, not something that precedes him, as this would be a logical fallacy. He said ‘I believe so that I
may understand’.

His argument comes in 2 forms, the first of these being that God is ‘that than which nothing greater
can be thought’. He argued that even someone who denies God exists believes the definition of God
