Ensure your success with us...... Explain how technology such as geographic information systems or farm management software can support sustainable farming practices. Imagine you are managing a mid-sized farm in a drought-prone region of South Africa. Propose a farm management plan that integrates soil and water management, crop management, and livestock management. Highlight how you would use modern technology such as precision agriculture and drones to enhance sustainability and profitability. You are preparing an independent research project on the effectiveness of integrating technology in agricultural education. Identify a research gap in this field. Suggest a suitable research design and data collection method. Explain how your study could contribute to both theory and practice in agricultural education. Critically discuss how sustainable agricultural practices contribute to societal well-being and the viability of rural communities in South Africa. In your answer, link your discussion to at least two Sustainable Development Goals. Read the following scenario: A group of final-year agricultural student teachers is tasked with helping a rural school establish a community garden to improve food security. They must integrate theories of learning into their project. Using Constructivism and Experiential Learning Theory, explain how the student teachers can guide the learners in constructing knowledge, reflecting on their experiences, and applying agricultural concepts practically. Provide examples of teaching strategies. Discuss how indigenous knowledge systems can be integrated into agricultural education to address the impacts of climate change on rural farming communities. Provide at least two examples of indigenous practices that promote resilience and sustainability. Outline three economic challenges faced by rural communities and suggest one solution for each. How can multiple intelligences be applied in agricultural education to address learners’ diverse needs? Assignment 4 2026
Unique number:
Due date: September 2026

QUESTION 1

Sustainable agricultural practices and societal well-being

Sustainable agriculture supports rural well-being because it aims to produce food
while protecting the soil, water, biodiversity and other resources that farming
communities need over many years. In South Africa, rural households often depend
on farming for food, income and local employment, which means that weak
agricultural systems can quickly deepen poverty and food insecurity. Practices such
as crop rotation, mulching, conservation agriculture, careful water use and drought
tolerant crop choices can help farmers protect production during difficult climatic
conditions. Evidence from smallholder maize farmers shows that climate smart
practices can improve productivity and household food and nutrition security when
compared with farms that do not use these approaches (Adeagbo et al., 2024).

Practices such
as crop rotation, mulching, conservation agriculture, careful water use and drought

conditions. Evidence from smallholder maize farmers shows that climate smart
practices can improve productivity and household food and nutrition security when
compared with farms that do not use these approaches (Adeagbo et al., 2024).

These practices also contribute to the long-term viability of rural communities
because they reduce pressure on natural resources while helping households
maintain productive land. Soil conservation improves moisture retention and reduces
erosion, while water saving methods become especially important where rainfall is
uncertain and droughts are becoming more disruptive. The 2023 to 2024 drought
showed how strongly changing rainfall conditions can affect crop output and the
financial position of farmers, with national summer grain and oilseed production
expected to fall sharply during that season (Department of Agriculture, Land Reform
and Rural Development, 2024). In my view, sustainability therefore has a practical
meaning for rural families because it helps protect both present food needs and the
productive base that future generations will depend upon.

Sustainable farming has a direct link with Sustainable Development Goal 2 because
this goal promotes food security, better nutrition, stronger smallholder productivity
and resilient food production systems. South Africa specifically tracks sustainable
food production and resilient agricultural practices under target 2.4, which shows that
agricultural sustainability forms part of the country’s wider development
responsibilities (Statistics South Africa, n.d.). Community gardens, household food
production and stronger local value chains can improve access to fresh food while
also reducing the amount of household income spent on basic vegetables and other
