Hematopoiesis -Process of blood cell production, differentiation,
and development. Types include erythropoesis,
leukopoiesis, thrombopoiesis.
-Occurs in bone marrow, liver, spleen, lymph
nodes, and thymus.
-Only mature cells should be seen in a peripheral
smear, but in some diseases the BM will release
immature cells early.

Factors that influence development -Presence of stem cells.
-Environment the cells are in.
-Regulatory proteins and growth factors including
erythropoietin, granulocyte-macrophage colony,
granulocyte colony stimulating factor.

Fetal Development: yolk sac -Extramedullary hematopoiesis.
-2-8 weeks of embryonic life immature RBCs are
made.
-2-4 months yolk sac production decreases.

, Fetal development: Fetal liver -2-4 months fetal liver begins to produce cells. 2
months: granulocytes and megakarocytes appear,
RBCs begin to carry more O2, spleen also begins
production.
-Lymphocytes at 4 months, Monocytes at 5
months, at 5 months bone marrow is primary site.

At birth, -Liver stops production of blood cells.
-90% bones contain red marrow, called medullary
hematopoiesis.

Adult hematopoiesis -Age 18+: Red marrow in flat bones like vertebrae,
ribs, sternum, and pelvis. Yellow marrow in left over
spaces.
-To study hematopoiesis - must get red marrow,
commonly from the iliac crest or sternum.
-At 65, 40% of BM is making cells.

Hematopoietic precursors -Pluripotent stem cells can make all cell lineages,
1% of cells in BM of adults. Differentiate based on
exposure to factors and receptors.
-Hematopoietic stem cells only become blood
cells.
-Common Lymphoid precursors produce T, B, and
NK cells.
-Common myeloid precursors differentiate into
GMPs to make monocytes and granulocytes and
MEPs to make Platelets and RBCs.

Cell maturation -Maturity brings on changes in the cytoplasm,
nucleus, and cell size.
-Can't distinguish go with more mature stage.
-Megaloblastic maturation: cytoplasm matures
before nucleus.
