International Politics: Key Concepts and Theories
for Students Quizzes Latest 2026 With Answers
Authoritarianism

A political system where power is concentrated in one leader or a small group,

with limited political freedoms and weak political opposition. Example: North

Korea under Kim Jong Un—no real opposition or free elections.

Totalitarianism

An extreme form of authoritarianism where the government controls nearly all

aspects of life, including politics, economy, media, education, and ideology.

Example: Nazi Germany or Stalin's USSR—propaganda, secret police, and

surveillance.

People's Republic of China (PRC) / Chinese Communist Party (CCP)

A one-party authoritarian state where the CCP controls government, military,

courts, and media while allowing a mixed economy with strong state control.

Example: Great Firewall internet censorship and restrictions on political

opposition.

Hard Power

The use of military force or economic pressure to coerce other states into doing

something. Example: U.S. invasion of Iraq (2003) or sanctions on Iran/Russia.

, Soft Power

Influencing other countries through attraction and persuasion such as culture,

values, and diplomacy. Example: Hollywood, U.S. universities, and global spread

of American culture.

Classical Realism

Theory that international politics is driven by human nature (self-interest, fear,

power) in an anarchic system. Example: States competing for oil or territory to

increase security.

Structural Realism (Neorealism)

Theory that state behavior is shaped by the structure of the international system

(distribution of power), not human nature. Example: Cold War alliances forming

around the U.S. and USSR.

Peace of Westphalia (1648)

Treaty that ended the Thirty Years' War and created the modern system of

sovereign states with control over their territory. Example: States gained

independence to choose their own religion and policies.
