Explain the difference between essential and nonessential nutrients. _ Essential nutrients cannot be synthesized by the human body, so they must be consumed in food (i.e. vitamins). Nonessential nutrients can be synthesized by the human body, so they need not be obtained directly from food (i.e. carbs, proteins, and fats). 2. Macronutrients are an essential nutrient that supplies energy to the body such as carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Micronutrients are vitamin or mineral need in smaller amount to regulate the body processes. 3. The body needs energy to function. Only carbohydrates, proteins, and fats provide energy. 4. Basal Metabolism is the energy required to carry on the involuntary activities of the body at rest—the energy needed to sustain the metabolic activities of cells and tissues.
