Impressionism Began in Paris. Gives the suggestion without giving it in a straight forward way.

, Characteristics of Impressionism -Fragmentation
-Pure color side by side
-Light, natural light
-Plein air, painting out doors, taking advantage of natural light
-Metal tubes for portable paints
-Railroads, gets the artist out of the city and into nature
-Japanese art, love of the exotic

Themes of Impressionism the message the art is trying to get across:
-subjective artistic view
-social alienation, comes from interest in natural people, a lot of paintings of
women
-male gaze or valorization of women
-nature, capturing fleeting moments, produced art in a day instead of a month
-common people
-rebelling against the establishment

Manet French. Father of impressionism. A movement from realism to impressionism.
Portrays social commentaries. He used cropping andn painted a lot of women. He
was more scandalous, painted people

Monet the purist of the impressionist. Very subjective. had a love of nature, captured the
spontaneous moments of nature, plein air. He tried to capture the envelope-what
surrounds the stuff in the painting, the atmosphere. He wasn't interested in
painting people. captures the suggestion of the people. He did series of
paintings, multiple images capturing one fleeting moment

Renoir Survived off of the portraits he painted. He did a lot of portraits of women.

the back bone of society, he painted them as beautiful but also strong. Made
them look better than reality.

Degas Came from a higher social class. Used different materials to paint, oils but also
pastels. Very interested in strong lines, Gets the idea of strong lines from the
Japanese. he was really into the human form, painted a bunch of ballerinas and
cropped the paintings. Validated the working class

Cassatt American woman. Upper class. Painted scenes of mother and children. Gives a
realistic look at the people, not like Renoir. Validates the role of women through
painting her sister. Good friends with Degas.

Rodin Sculptor. Used bronze and marble. THE Parisian sculptor.
Bronze: pieces that have a lot of texture, give the feeling of being unpolished ad
unfinished. the light plays a big part in his pieces
Marble: soft texture. Creates a hazy sensuality of Renoir's figures

Claudel Female sculptor and lover of Rodin. It didn't end well between them. It was
frowned upon to be a female sculptor

Debussy Music. interested in fragmentation in melody, tonecolor- what makes the different
instruments sound different. Called his symphonies symphonic sketches, gave and
unfinished, unpolished feel. Shifting rhythms.
