These are study notes for Grade 12 Life Sciences, written strictly according to the South African CAPS curriculum requirements. They are designed for quick revision or active recall. Contents Included: DNA: The Code of Life & RNA: Cell locations , nucleotide structure components, complementary base pairing, differences between DNA and RNA, steps of semi-conservative replication, and the full sequence of protein synthesis (Transcription and Translation). Meiosis: Chronological breakdowns of all phases in Meiosis I and II, mechanisms of genetic variation (crossing over and random arrangement), non-disjunction errors, and Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21). Includes a basic comparison table between mitosis and meiosis. Genetics and Inheritance: Core definitions and Mendel's laws. Step by step exam layouts for Monohybrid crosses, Dihybrid crosses, Incomplete dominance, Co-dominance, and Sex-linked traits (Hemophilia and Red-Green Color Blindness). Includes rules for interpreting pedigree charts. Mutations & Biotechnology: Differences between gene and chromosomal mutations. Summaries of cloning , genetic modification (insulin production), and stem cell research, along with the standard pros, cons, and ethical points tested in exams.

Topic 1: DNA - The Code of Life

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the molecule
that carries the genetic blueprint
for all living organisms.

,DNA is found in three main locations within a cell:

Nuclear DNA: Found inside the nucleus. It forms chromosomes and contains the
majority of the organism's genetic information.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA): Found inside the mitochondria. Inherited exclusively
from the mother.

Chloroplast DNA: Found in the chloroplasts of plant cells.

, DNA is a polymer made up of monomers called nucleotides.
It is a double-stranded helix (looks like a twisted ladder).
Each nucleotide is made of three components:
A phosphate group.
A deoxyribose sugar molecule.
A nitrogenous base.
There are four nitrogenous bases in DNA, divided into two groups:
Purines: Adenine (A) and Guanine (G)
• Pyrimidines: Thymine (T) and Cytosine (C)
Complementary Base Pairing Rule: Adenine always pairs with Thymine (A=T)
≡
and Guanine always pairs with Cytosine (G C) via weak hydrogen bonds.
