, SPLEEN
Lymphatic organ connected to the blood vascular
system.
It acts as filter for blood & plays important role in the
immune responses of body.
Synonyms : lien(latin), spen(grek)
Shape : wedge shaped organ. It is wedged in between the
fundus of stomach & diaphagm.
Color & consistancy : soft, highly vascular & dark purple.
Location : mainly in right hypochondrium & partly in
epigastrium.
On an average spleen is 1” thick, 3’ broad, 5’ long, 7
ounces in weight & related to 9 to 11th ribs.
Normally spleen is non palpable.

, Position(axis of spleen) : lies obliquely along the long
axis of the 10th rib. directed downwards, forwards &
laterally making an angle of 45 degrees with horizontal
plane.
External features : 2 ends, 3 borders, 2 surfaces.
1)Two ends-
Anterior end is expanded. It is directed downwards
and forwards & reaches the midaxillary line.
Posterior end is rounded. It is directed upwards,
backwards & medially.
2)Three borders-
Superior border is characteristically notched near
anterior end.
