Discover evidence-based strategies for reducing hospital-acquired injuries in this comprehensive nursing research paper. This undergraduate-level study explores critical patient safety interventions using the PICOT framework to structure clinical inquiries and identify effective fall prevention protocols. Key topics covered: • Hospital falls and injury prevention mechanisms • PICOT framework application in nursing research • Evidence-based clinical practice interventions • Patient safety protocols and risk mitigation This research paper is invaluable for nursing students studying patient safety, clinical practice standards, and evidence-based interventions. It provides a structured approach to understanding how healthcare facilities can implement fall prevention programs that directly impact patient outcomes. Perfect for assignments, case studies, and exam preparation. Ideally suited for undergraduate nursing students, clinical practice courses, and patient safety modules. The paper demonstrates high-quality academic writing with proper research methodology. Find our complete subject bundles at Students Resource Hub on Payhip.

Evidence-based nursing research on hospital falls, patient safety protocols, and fall prevention

using PICOT framework.

Introduction

Hospital experience is an essential element in the care delivery and healing process of

patients. Quality care in hospitals covers all aspects of patient safety from exposures and risks

that may prolong the sickness. Hospital fall is one of the major causes of injuries to patients.

Falls have been attributed to various injuries that patients are likely to incur during their

treatment. The annual fall rate in hospitals has increased in the United States because of various

factors that caregivers fail to address when interacting and providing care to the patients (Lee,

Lee, & Khang, 2013). In this case, adult and geriatric patients are more vulnerable to falls

compared to the other groups of patients.

Picot question: Does increasing the staff levels in hospitals reduce the cases of patients

falls compared to the provision of ambulatory assistive devices among the geriatric patients

during care delivery period?

According to the study conducted by Cox et al. (2015) and the data from the department

of health and human service, the annual fall rate in hospitals is estimated at 700,000 to 1,000,000

people per year. Falls have resulted in injuries such as internal bleeding, fractures, and laceration,

which increase pain and suffering to the patients, as well as increasing the medical costs.

Therefore, addressing issues associated with hospital falls should be a priority for the healthcare

institutions and the government. About 30% of the falls taking place in the inpatient department

causes injuries, and 5% of the injuries result in cases such as subdural hematoma, excessive

bleeding, and even death (Cox et al., 2015). Also, falls have been associated with the increased

hospital costs both to the facility and clients. Patients who fall and suffer serious injuries end up
