Preoperative Physical Exercises and Functional Recovery in Bariatric Surgery Patients: A

Literature Review

Extensive research has been done on ways patient outcomes can be improved among

bariatric surgery patients. The PICOT question sought to establish whether preoperative physical

exercises causes improved functional recovery and overall health related quality of life after

undergoing bariatric surgery. Numerous researches have been done on how exercises impact

outcomes after surgery. In regards to bariatric surgery, synthesis of research knowledge indicates

that preoperative physical exercises offer great potential improving postoperative outcomes.

Literature search provides a moderate level of evidence on the intervention as most research

focuses on postoperative outcomes.

Going through the research articles, there are no inconsistencies with the use of physical

exercising to improve outcomes. Preoperative immobility is being associated with poorer

postoperative outcomes and an increased risk of developing postoperative complications. Most

research results associated immobility before bariatric surgery with poor functional recovery

increased the length of stay and increased readmission and reoperation rate. It was also

associated with the risk of mortality and morbidity. The major inconsistency noticed was the

variation in the outcomes associated with lack of physical exercises. Whereas they had major

similarities, the methods used to measure outcomes varied between the researches, causing the

inconsistencies.

The evidence synthesized from the literature review provides string support for a change

in practice because physical exercising has consistently shown improved postoperative outcomes

in most research studies. Hence, it is well evidenced to be effective. Additionally, the

intervention also helps the patients adopt the habit and continue with the physical exercises
