Instructions
Dear Class:

There are 58 (some multiple answer questions) regular test questions taken from ESS 101
PowerPoint lecture material and special readings related to human interactions with geologic
processes and materials. The exam is worth 120 points towards your total score (including 1 point for
reading and signing honor statement) out of 400, but will show being out 130 because of the 10
bonus points).

There are also 5 bonus questions worth 2 points each that will be counted towards your total points,
but are extra credit. I will compile the final examination 2 grade out of 120 points. I will then add the
5 lecture extra credit points earned during the 2nd half of the quarter to the converted score out 120.
These points have been earned by the in person class students involvement in lecture discussion.
These points will be added to all student enrolled in ESS 101 (Sections A and B).

Question 1 pts

Which of the following statements are true regarding elastic
deformation?

(2 answers are correct)

Stress and strain are proportional

Stress and strain are not proportional

Basin and Range faulting represents elastic deformation

Fold structures are the result of elastic deformation

Isostatic uplift following deglaciation represents elastic deformation

Question 2 pts

Why will the Great Lakes drain in the future through the Mississippi
River to the Gulf of Mexico?

, none of the other answers are correct as Great Lakes will always flow
east to the Atlantic through the St. Lawrence River

a sediment dam is being breached between Lake Michigan and the
Mississippi River

northern Great Lakes are still isostatically rebounding because of ice
sheet cover while the southern Great Lakes are fully compensated (not
rebounding)

southern Great Lakes are still isostatically rebounding because of ice
sheet cover while the northern Great Lakes are fully compensated (not
rebounding)

the St. Lawrence River drainage is uplifting and Great Lakes will be
diverted south towards the Mississippi River drainage

Partial Question 3 pts

Match the depositional setting with sedimentary structures that would
most likely form there:

Ephemeral (arid) Lake mudcracks

, Meandering stream graded beds

surface of sand dunes symmetric ripples

Question 4 pts

What are the three controls that determine if a material will deform in a
brittle or ductile manner? (three answers are correct)

sea level

age of the units being deformed

rocks are hard and will always break

low strain rate

composition of deforming material

temperature

seasonal changes in atmospheric temperature

thickness of the deforming beds
