TMN3701 Assignment 3 (COMPLETE
ANSWERS) - 28 May 2026; 100%
TRUSTED workings, explanations and
solutions.
QUESTION 1 1.1 Explain the significant role of input, interaction and output in the context of additional
language teaching. Provide examples to support your answer. (10)

, In additional language teaching, Input, Interaction, and Output form an interconnected framework that
facilitates language acquisition.

Input refers to the language learners are exposed to (listening and reading). According to Stephen
Krashen's Input Hypothesis, learners acquire language when they receive "Comprehensible Input" (i.e.,
"i+1"), which is language slightly above their current level. This allows them to absorb new structures
naturally.

Example: A teacher uses pictures, gestures, and simplified sentences (e.g., "The boy is running quickly")
to explain new adverbs before asking students to identify them.

Interaction is the communicative exchange between learners or between teacher and learner. Michael
Long’s Interaction Hypothesis suggests that negotiating meaning (asking for clarification, rephrasing)
makes input comprehensible.

Example: During a group discussion about "Sunset by the sea," one student says, "The water is moving,"
and a peer asks, "Do you mean the waves are crashing?" This negotiation deepens understanding.

Output is the language learners produce (speaking/writing). Merrill Swain’s Output Hypothesis argues
that producing language forces learners to move from semantic processing (getting the idea across) to
syntactic processing (getting the grammar right).

Example: A student writing an essay realizes they do not know the past tense of "freeze," prompting
them to look it up, thereby solidifying their grammatical knowledge.

1.2 Highlight the potential challenges teachers might face when implementing input, interaction and
output in the classroom and provide strategies to overcome these challenges. (10) (20)

Challenge and Strategies to Overcome them

1. Input is too complex leading to learner anxiety and confusion. Use scaffolding: Pre-teach key
vocabulary using visuals, realia (real objects), or demonstrations before introducing the text.

2. Lack of meaningful interaction where students prefer speaking their home language or working alone.
Structured activities: Implement "Information Gap" tasks or role-plays where learners must use the
target language to complete a specific goal (e.g., finding a lost item).

3. Low output due to fear of making mistakes (Affective Filter). Create a safe environment: Use delayed
error correction (note mistakes and review them later without interrupting the student) and praise
effort to build confidence.

4. Time management: Providing sufficient input, facilitating interaction, and allowing for individual
output is time-consuming. Integrate skills: Use the same text for input, pair-share for interaction, and a
short summary for output to streamline the lesson.
