Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of a psychiatrist named Dick

Diver who is married to a wealthy woman Nicole Diver, one of his patients before. Both had

two children. The Divers lived in the French Riviera throwing fabulous parties. When one

day they met Rosemary Hoyt, an American movie starlet who became their friend, and fell in

love with Dick that soon later turned into an affair. After confessing her love for him, Dick

reveals that he is in love with her too but the affair cannot proceed as he loves his wife,

Nicole. He cares about her especially her health as he describes Nicole as weak and this affair

might affect her mental health toward a complete breakdown. Another Divers’ companion,

Tommy Barban, whom Nicole fell in love with and had an affair. By the end of the novel,

Nicole chooses Tommy and marries him, though after the marriage she keeps in touch with

Dick, writing him letters and letters. And learning that he moved back to America to practice

medicine. Although it seems that Dick is having a good life in America, it turns out that he is

somewhat involved in a lawsuit about medicine and moves from small towns to even smaller

towns. Throughout their life the Divers’ marriage is affected by their affairs, the absence of

one another in their life, and the alleged sexual harassment of Dick Diver that contributed to

the collapse of their marriage and the downfall of Dick’s career and life.

The story begins on the French Riviera, the Mediterranean coast of the Southeast

corner of France during the roaring 20s, specifically in June 1925. During the Roaring 20s,
