Introduction
Over the years, the concept of free will and satisfying the human person's desires has
been a subject of concern omg the philosophers. Various arguments have attributed the concept
as a determinant of human sufficiency based on the animalistic mentality and intelligence
constructs dependent on different situations. Anchoring on these constructs and focusing on
Frankfurt's research on the freewill concepts, this paper will explore the high order desires that
affect the human person and the implications to the society. In exploring these aspects, I will
focus my discussion on Frankfurt's notion of personhood, desire, and free will. Firstly, I will
explain what a higher order desire is followed by deliberating on the idea that 'we act freely
when we act on desires that are supported or not contradicted by higher order desires. I will then
negate his philosophy of free will, conceptualized through desire using two objections. At the tail
end of my paper, I will make my conclusion that will be grounded on this essay plan discussion.
What is a higher order desire?
According to Frankfurt (1971, p.7), A higher order desire can be referred to as a ‘desire
about a desire,’ that is theoretically motivated by an individual’s long-term goals, reasoning,
values, convictions, beliefs, and their ‘capacity for reflective self-evaluation. Frankfurt explains
the distinctive aspects existing between the first and the second order desires on human existence
