MARKETING PLANNING:

Marketing planning: is the structured process of setting marketing objectives and formulating appropriate strategies
to achieve them.

Marketing plan: is the formal document/plan of action designed to meet these objectives.

KEY POINTS:

• Focuses on aligning marketing goals with overall business objectives.
• Common goals include increasing market share, improving brand awareness, finding ways to sell more
products or services, or entering new markets.
• Involves designing and implementing marketing strategies (e.g., product, price, place, promotion decisions)
to achieve set targets.
• Provides a clear roadmap for business growth and competitive advantage.

ROLE OF MARKETING PLANNING

• Identifies customer needs/wants and develops strategies to satisfy them.
• Provides clear objectives and direction for the marketing team.
• Ensures alignment between marketing and overall business goals.
• Supports profitability (for-profit) or social goals (non-profit).
• Example:
o For-profit → Increase market share by 10% in 12 months.
o Non-profit → Raise awareness of recycling among local youth.

MAIN ELEMENTS OF A MARKETING PLAN

1. Executive summary → short overview of the whole plan.
2. Situational analysis → internal (strengths/weaknesses) & external (opportunities/threats).
3. Market analysis → competition, market size, growth trends.
4. Marketing objectives → SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound).
5. Market research → data on consumer needs, trends, preferences.
6. Target market & segmentation → identify customer groups.
7. Marketing mix (7Ps) →
o Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Process, Physical evidence.
8. Marketing strategies → long-term actions (e.g., market penetration, product development).
9. Budgets & resources → allocation of money, staff, time.

DETAILED MARKETING PLANS & FLEXIBILITY

WHY A DETAILED MARKETING PLAN IS IMPORTANT

, Aitana Fernadez SL

• Provides clear focus and direction for managers and employees.
• Ensures the business can formulate appropriate long-term marketing strategies.
• Acts as a prerequisite for designing strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
• Requires careful use of the traditional 4Ps (Product, Price, Place, Promotion) as a foundation.

RISK OF RIGID PLANNING

• A plan that is followed too rigidly may fail when external conditions change (e.g., new competitors,
economic downturns, shifts in customer trends).
• Plans must remain flexible and adaptable to stay relevant.

CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ADAPTING

• Inappropriate marketing decisions may be made.
• Can result in financial losses and reduced profitability.
• Missed opportunities in a changing market.

TOOLS TO MONITOR AND ADAPT

Marketing managers use tools to adjust plans effectively:

• Market research data → to track changing customer needs.
• Market analysis → to understand competitors and external factors.
• Sales forecasting → to predict future demand and adjust strategies.

A marketing plan is vital for direction, but it must be dynamic and regularly updated using data-driven tools.

ADVANTAGES

1. Better strategies → Helps managers design effective marketing strategies to meet customer needs and
wants.
2. Sense of direction → Provides purpose for marketers, improving employee motivation and productivity.
3. Decision-making tool → Identifies potential problems early and allows for planned solutions.
4. Organizational alignment → Ensures marketing plans and strategies are consistent with the overall business
objectives, boosting chances of success.
5. Improved financial decisions → Marketing budgets can be allocated more efficiently and cost-effectively.

DISADVANTAGES

1. Costly and time-consuming → Preparing comprehensive plans uses up resources, leading to opportunity
cost.
2. Not realistic for small firms → Limited budgets make marketing planning less practical or valuable.
3. Quickly outdated → External environment changes rapidly, making even well-prepared plans obsolete.
4. Risk of rigidity → Plans should be flexible; otherwise, firms may fail to respond to unexpected threats or
opportunities.
