Part 1: Short Questions

What is the primary Freudian influence in reading Figure 33.2?

The primary Freudian influence is the emphasis of the unconscious mind. Here, the

subconscious mind is assumed to govern the behavior to a bigger extent than most people think.

For this reason, the purpose of psychoanalysis is to turn the unconscious to be conscious.

What is the difference between expressionism and abstract expressionism?

In expressionism, the world is seen as the source of suffering. Here, it is hard for an

individual to avoid this world but has to deal with it. On the other hand, abstract expressionism is

about cosmic energy which relates to the subconscious mind.

Explain how Dada might be reflective of the change in society as a result of science opposed

to psychology.

Dada is the concept which came to bring the usage of the mind in the work like painting

instead of the use of eyes. This is because during the time of Freud’s theories as well as Marx’s

Communisms, the society seemed to be turned upside down. It denotes the irrational art

movement which aimed at restoring the application of mind in performing tasks.

What is one primary similarity and one primary difference between the dance of Martha

Graham and Merce Cunningham?

The primary similarity is that in both cases, dancers make drama simply out of addressing

as well as invading space. The primary difference is that Graham’s dances are characterized by

musical detail while Cunningham’s dances are not tied to musical details (Fiero, 2016).

Review Figure 33.2. Provide three attributes of the painting that reflect the expressionist

movement.

The typical trait of painting which portrays expressionist movement is to present the

world which is merely prone from subjective aspect through a major distortion in order to trigger

moods or ideas. The expressionist artists seek to display the meaning of emotional experience

instead of the physical reality through their paintings. The third attribute is that the

expressionism emphasizes on the individual perspective and this is characterized by positivism.

Part 2: Essay Question

Similarities and differences of readings 33.2 and 33.3

Similarities of readings 33.2 and 33.3

The main similarity between Freud and the new psychology as explained in the reading

33.2 and 33.3 respectively is that, in both cases, the emphases is about understanding and

explaining the human behavior. The reading 33.2 is titled “Freud” while the reading 33.3 is titled

“The New Psychology and Literature”. Freud explains human behavior by associating it with the

experiences of the childhood. Here, the behavior of an adult is said to be guided by the

experiences that he or she encountered in his or her childhood (Fiero, 2016). Similarly, the new

psychology in reading 33.3 also aims at understanding and explaining the causes of human

behavior but through emphasizes the role of human decisions in their behaviors and personality.
