Control System Definition A control system consists of subsystems and processes (or plants) assembled for
the purpose of obtaining a desired output with desired performance, given a
specified input.
input/stimulus = desired behaviour
output/response = actual behaviour
What are the main measures of performance? Two major measures of performance are apparent:
1. the transient response and
2. the steady-state error.

The primary reasons for byilding control systems
What are the two main configurations of control-systems? Open-Loop and Closed-Loop
Analogy:
Assume that you calculate the amount of time you need to study for an
examination that covers three chapters in order to get an A. If the professor adds a
fourth chapter (a disturbance), then you are:
a) an open-loop system if you do not detect the disturbance and add study time to
that previously calculated. The result of this oversight would be a lower grade than
you expected.
b) a closed loop system if you detect the disturbance and add to the previously
calculated study time.
What is an input-transducer? An input transducer is a device that converts a physical quantity (like temperature,
position, or pressure) into an electrical signal that a control system can use.

What is a summing-junction? A summing junction is a point in a control system where two or more input signals
are combined algebraically (added or subtracted) to produce a single output
signal.
What is Controller? A controller is the part of a control system that receives the input signal, compares
~
it with the desired value, and generates a control signal to make the plant produce
the correct output.
What is a process (or plant)? A plant (or process) is the real physical thing being controlled—like a motor, heater,
⚙
or machine—that responds to the control system and produces the desired result.
