Master cell biology with BIO201L Lab 2 – Cell Structure and Function, focusing on prokaryotic vs. eukaryotic cells, organelle identification, and the relationship between structure and function. This lab integrates microscopy, cell modeling, and comparative analysis. Biology students at the University of Texas at Austin and the Ohio State University College of Medicine use this lab to sharpen exam strategies, improve critical thinking, and succeed in cell biology coursework.

Pre-Lab Questions:

“1. Identify the major similarities and differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. “
Similarities
Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells bears a lipid bilayer which is an arrangement of
phospholipids and proteins that acts as a selective barrier between the internal and external
environment of the cell.
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells bothuse deoxyribonucleic acid as the basis for their genetic
information.
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell require ribosomes to facilitate RNA translation and the creation
of protein which is very essential for their functioning.
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell both possess cytoplasm which facilitates biochemical reactions
in the cell.
Differences
Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus bound by a double membrane while prokaryotic cell have
no nucleus.
Eukaryotic DNA linear and complexed with packing proteins called histones while prokaryotic
DNA is circular and is neither associated with histones.
Eukaryotic cells are ordinarily larger (10 – 100um) while prokaryotic cells are small (1 – 10um)
Eukaryotic cells contain many membrane enclosed, large, complex organells in the cytoplasm
while prokaryotic cells do not contain these membrane bound organelles.
Eukaryotic cells undergo sexual reproduction while prokaryoticv cells under asexual
reproduction
“2.Where is the DNA housed in a prokaryotic cell? Where is it housed in a eukaryotic cell? “
In a prokaryotic cell, the DNA is housed in a the region called nucleiod . In eukaryotic cll, the
DNA is housed in the nucleus.
“3.Name three structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell. “
The structures which provide support and protection in a eukaryotic cell are cell membrane,
cell wall, and cytoskeleton

A- Anaphase
B- Prophase

“2.What is the difference between the rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum? “
The rough endoplasmic recticulum consist of flatterened sac, studded with protein synthesizing
particles termed ribosomes on the outer surface while smooth endoplasmic recticulum consist
of tubular vesicle that lack ribosomes on the outer surface and is involved in the synthesis and
storage of lipids.
The rough endoplasmic recticulum has ribosomes on the outer surface while smooth
endoplasmic recticulum do not have ribosomes on the outer surface.
The rough endoplasmic recticulum is mostly found around the nuclear membrane while the
smooth endoplasmic recticulum is mostly found near the cell membrane.
Rough endoplasmic recticulum is formed from the nuclear membrane while the smooth
endoplasmic recticulum is formed after shedding of ribosomes from the rough endoplasmic
recticulum.
Rough endoplasmic recticulum posses narrow pores below the ribosomes that allow the
passage of newly synthesized polypeptides to the cystosol while smooth endoplasmic
recticulum have no pores on its surface.
“3.Would an animal cell be able to survive without a mitochondria? Why or why not? “
