It was first developed by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, who arranged elements by their atomic mass and predicted undiscovered elements. Structure of the Periodic Table 1. Periods (Rows) Horizontal rows are called periods. There are 7 periods in total. Elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells. 2. Groups (Columns) Vertical columns are called groups. There are 18 groups. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties and the same number of valence electrons.
