Summary Microbes in Human Welfare
What is microbes? Microbes are a very small organism in size range of microbes and micrometers and therefore can't be visualised by naked eyes. Study of microbes is known as MICROBIOLOGY. They are cosmopolitan i.e present everywhere on earth in a handful of soil there can be thousands of bacteria. Archaebacteria are extremophils due to the presence of pseudomurein cell wall. Microbes can with both friend and foe. As foe-Adenovirus causes respiratory infection, Tobacco Mosaic virus causes molting and decolorization of leaves. As friend- Helps in curd formation, toddy, cheese etc. insecticides and pesticides are used to kill insects and pests that harms crops and reduce yields of crops. Biocontrol works on a principle of natural predation. Eg:Lady bird beetle kills aphids, dragonfly kills mosquitoes. Bacillus Thuringeiensis (bt) controls butterfly caterpillars on plants, Baculovirus attacks insects and arthropods and is used for narrow spectrum( specific insecticidal application). As Antibiotics. Penicillin, most significant discovery of 20th century by Alexander Fleming in 1928 is a fungal antibiotic named after a mould PENICILLIUM NOTATUM. Chain and florey unlocked the full potential of the penicillin antibiotic. Other antibiotics- Streptomycin- S.gricius Neomycin- S.fradie. Bioactive molecule- Streptokinase helps in removing blood clots. Important for the patient suffering from myocardial infraction. CyclosporineA by trichoderma plysporum is an immuno suppressive agent. Statin by Monascus purpureus(yeast) helps in lowering blood cholesterol. Microbes as sewage treatment and biogas plants.
