Galen A&P NU-110 Exam 4
3 parts of the brain stem - ✔️✔️midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata

Medulla Oblongata - ✔️✔️is called the vital center and vomiting

Medulla Oblongata and Vitals controls - ✔️✔️heart rate, blood pressure, and
respiration. The vital function

Medulla Oblongata and the Vomiting center - ✔️✔️it receives input directly and
indirectly from activation of the chemoreceptor trigger zone. (CTZ)

Cerebellum - ✔️✔️is the little brain. It controls voluntary muscle activity. tied to the
visual part of the brain

When the Cerebellum doesn't work it presents as - ✔️✔️intoxication

Functions involving more than one area of the brain - ✔️✔️Sleep, Memory, emotion,
arousal

Bone of CNS system - ✔️✔️Cranium and vertebral column. Is to Protect

Meninges - ✔️✔️Pia mater, arachnoid mater, dura mater

Cerebrospinal Fluid - ✔️✔️Circulates within the subarachnoid space

The Skull of the Baby - ✔️✔️there is space so the brain can hit off of the skull walls

Pia mater - ✔️✔️Closest to the brain. Provides allot of the blood supplied to the brain
that it is going to need

Dura mater - ✔️✔️is the outermost layer. thick and tough protective layer.

Arachnoid layer - ✔️✔️looks like a spider web. the middle layer

Blood Brain Barrier - ✔️✔️is the barrier of the movement of potentially harmful
chemicals in the Central nervous system.

Spinal Cord - ✔️✔️is a continuation of the brain stem. Tubelike structure located in the
spinal cavity. Diameter is similar to thickness of the thumb

The Spinal Cord Extends from the - ✔️✔️Foramen magnum to the L1

, Ascending/ Sensory - ✔️✔️From the Peripheral to the CNS

Descending/motor - ✔️✔️The reaction to the stimulus. Ex: moving hand. From CNS to
Peripheral

Ascending 3 different tracts - ✔️✔️-spinothalamic: Pain pathway
-Dorsal Column
-Spinocerebellar

Neurons and Glia can grow back - ✔️✔️but they grow back very slowly.

neuron information only travels - ✔️✔️in one direction. That way there is no traffic jams
or mixed signals.

Dendrites - ✔️✔️where the information comes in to the neuron

Cell Body - ✔️✔️houses the nucleus and other cell structures. Receives signal from the
dendrites.

Axon - ✔️✔️gets information from the cell body

Axon Terminals - ✔️✔️Get information from the axon. Is where we release all of the
neuron transmitters.

Myelin - ✔️✔️Not all neurons have ______ but those that do move information quickly

Afferent Neurons - ✔️✔️are sensory neurons. Carries information to the Central
nervous system.

Interneurons - ✔️✔️makes connections within the central nervous system.

Efferent Neurons. - ✔️✔️Motor neurons. Carry information away from the Central
nervous system and towards the periphery.

Neurons and Glia are all - ✔️✔️intermingled together

Action Potential or Nerve impulse - ✔️✔️is the electrical signal. Can only happen in the
neuron

Neuron can only be in one of 3 states - ✔️✔️Polarization, Depolarization,
Repolarization
