1.2 Location of Sabie

Sabie is situated in Mpumalanga on the north eastern part of the Drakensberg
Escarpment. Its approximate absolute location is 25.1 degrees south and 30.8
degrees east, while its relative location places it about 64 kilometres from Mbombela
and approximately 44 kilometres from Hazyview. Sabie is also around 28 kilometres
south of Graskop and can be reached by roads such as the R37, R532, R536 and
R537 (Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, 2026).

The location gives Sabie an important advantage because it is centrally positioned
for visitors travelling along the Panorama Route and towards the Kruger National
Park. South African Tourism also identifies Sabie as a useful base for exploring the
Panorama Route and nearby natural attractions (South African Tourism, 2026).
Location is important in tourism because it affects available natural resources,
travelling distance, accessibility and the kinds of tourism activities that can develop in
an area.

1.3 Natural and Human Made Environment

Sabie is surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests, valleys and waterfalls that form an
attractive natural setting for tourism. The town lies among large commercial pine and
