-Attachment sites for muscles
-Storage of minerals and calcium
-Blood cell production that occurs in red bone marrow\
-Energy storage in yellow bone marrow

Diaphysis Shaft of the bone

Epiphysis One end of a long bone

Metaphyses Areas between epiphysis and diaphysis that include growing bones like the
epiphyseal plate

Describe the parts of a long bone Endosteum- lining of marrow cavity
Periosteum- tough membrane covering bone, but not the cartilage

What does the matrix of bone contains? Bone tissue consists of separated cells surrounded by the matrix. The matrix of
bone contains inorganic salts and collagen fibers.

Calcification Occurs only in the presence of collagen fibers, process when salts are deposited
in a framework of collagen fibers.

, Osteogenic cells Develops into an osteoblast, give rise to osteoblasts

Osteoblast cells Forms the bone matrix, builder

Osteocytes cells Maintain bone tissue, G0 phase only

Osteoclasts Function in resorption and breakdown the bone matrix, chew matrix

What provide the bone's hardness? Calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate

What provide the bone's flexibility? Organic collagen fibers

What are the two types of bone? Spongy bone- many spaces, for red bone marrow
Compact bone- very few spaces

Osteons/Haversian systems Osteons or haversian systems contain blood vessels, lympatic vessels, nerves, and
osteocytes along with calcified matrix. Osteons are along lines of stress in the
bones.

Where is compact bone found? Solid hard layer of bone, found in the shafts of long bones with thin layers
