Samenvatting literatuur - Concepts in HMS – Coördination
Behorende bij hoorcollege 0: General information

The CNS (brain + spinal cord) controls coordination. You can’t measure the way our CNS is coordinating
movements. Dus hierover moeten theorieën worden gemaakt

The pathway:
Information through senses (HC1)  CNS  muscles  feedback from muscles through movement (HC
2) and also by moving you generate information that can be used in coordinating our movement, you see the
environment change (HC3)

Sensori-motorloop = continuous coupling between motor commands (movement generation) and the sensory
feedback that results from those movement. Also known as perception-action coupling
- Perception = organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information (= input) derived
from sensations and proprioception to represent and understand the environment.

Re-afference = the sensory feedback (afferent signals) that result from your own voluntary movements.

HC 1 : information

The term ‘Information’ is used in different ways in articles.
Computational approach says: the CNS is doing some processes to derive information:

sensations  Information processing  perception

Ecological approach says : direct perception, no processes. Information is already present in optical array.

Kind of definition of information is based on sensory signals that enters the CNS by our senses, it provides
information about the environment, our relation with the environment and about the states of the body.

zintuigelijke prikkeling:
- Computational approach  Bayesian state estimation. In this approach body has to process to get
meaningful information
3 models for perception action coupling :
o Inverse model
o Forward dynamic model
o Forward sensory model
- Ecological approach (no processing is needed, because the information is already present in the
structure of the light that surrounds you)

BAYESIAN STATE ESTIMATION

- Prior (= voorkennis) = the degree of prior information or prior experience by the perceiver
= provides the probability that the input had a specific value based on experience /knowledge.

- Likelihood (= waarschijnlijkheid van de waarneming) = provides the probability that actual sensory
input reflects a specific value. This reflects the degree of perceptual uncertainty
Observatie vindt plaats via senses: zicht, gehoor, tast etc.
schatten (= posterior)

- Posterior = prior x likelihood (= gecombineerde inschatting) = reflects perceived value and its
uncertainty, based on combinations of prior and likelihood, the posterior distribution always have
a tighter figure (smaller distribution graph)  reduce uncertainty
 The more ‘information’ (= prior-) sources you use  the less (perceptual) uncertainty
 Multiple likelihoods  uncertainty is further reduced
 Posterior is the final perception

Zowel prior en likelihood hebben een probability which can be shown into a distribution graph.
When multiplied, you get the probability distribution of the posterior.

height of the peak  reflects certainty
The higher the peak  the less uncertainty there is

place of the peak  reflects accuracy
Accuracy of perception depends on the values at which the peaks occur (&
also their widths) for the likelihood and priors

The higher the ‘weight’  larger influence on posterior

- Likelihood verandert, krijgt relatief minder gewicht in posterior (want minder goed zicht  piek lager)

Ames room: optical illusion
- Prior : The brain has built-in assumptions about the world; the walls
have the same size.
- Likelihood : it only occurs if you look through a peephole, because
then you use only one eye (less certain sensory information, no depth
with one eye = less higher peak in likelihood).

- posterior : prior x likelihood  resulting in you think that the distance
of the persons (to you) is the same, so you’d expect them to stand on
one depth-line causing the visual illusion.
