, Most common cause of hospital related GI illness

C. diff bacteria actually exists all around us. It's in the air,
water, soil, and in the feces of humans and animals. Many
people have the bacteria in their intestines and never have
any symptoms. The issue is when the person becomes
immunocompromised or when the bacteria infects an area
that isn't normally exposed to the bacteria. Can become
infected if you touch clothing, sheets, or other surfaces that
have come in contact with feces and then touch your mouth
or nose.

The bacteria is often spread in health care facilities, like
hospitals or nursing homes, where workers are more likely
to come into contact with it, and then with patients or
residents. Older adults in health care facilities are most at
risk, especially if they're taking antibiotics that kills the
healthy bacteria, allowing C. diff to grow unchecked.

This is the most serious antibiotic associated diarrhea. It's
common to have mild diarrhea when starting an antibiotic.
However, if diarrhea is occurring three or more times a day
and symptoms last for at least 2 days, need to see a doctor
as C-diff could be the cause.
