PDU3701 Assignment 2 2026 - DUE June 2026 [complete answers];100%trusted quality workings.Question 1 Read the following extract and respond to the questions that follow. "Education has to do with values. As such, the marginalisation of African values in education on the African continent, as witnessed in the colonial and postcolonial periods, has resulted in the general Westernisation of education in Africa. Owing to this, education systems in Africa have failed to acknowledge the cultural preferences and practices in education of African people. Instead, these education systems have given prominence to the cultural preferences and practices of the Western world, thereby perpetuation an ideology of the cultural superiority of the West". (Higgs and Letseka, 2024, p.13). 1.1 In what ways do you think "African values" were marginalised in the educational systems on the African continent? [10] 1.2 Define 'Westernisation' in your own terms and provide examples to justify your definition. [5] 1.3 Assume that you are a policymaker, and that you have been asked to develop a model of a 'decolonised curriculum' in an African country. What values would underpin your curriculum? Justify your answer. [10] 17 Question 2

Complete Expert-Guided Solutions

Question 1
1.1 In what ways were “African values” marginalised in African
education systems? (10)
African values were marginalised through the imposition of colonial
education systems that privileged Western epistemologies, languages, and
cultural norms over indigenous African knowledge systems. During the
colonial period, education was designed primarily to serve colonial
administrative and economic interests rather than the cultural and
intellectual development of African societies. Indigenous knowledge
systems — including oral traditions, communal ethics, spirituality,
indigenous sciences, and traditional governance structures — were
dismissed as primitive, unscientific, or inferior.
One significant form of marginalisation occurred through language policy.
European colonial languages such as English, French, and Portuguese
became the official languages of instruction, thereby undermining African
languages as legitimate carriers of knowledge. This created epistemic
exclusion, where learners were disconnected from knowledge rooted in
their lived experiences.
Curricula also centred Western history, philosophy, and scientific paradigms
while neglecting African intellectual traditions. African philosophical
concepts such as ubuntu (communal interdependence), respect for elders,
and collective responsibility were replaced with Western individualistic
values. Furthermore, educational structures promoted competitive
individual achievement rather than communal cooperation, which is central
to many African societies.
