What is the function of the vagina?

Give this one a try later!

exit for babies and menstrual fluid, entrance for penis/sperm

13) Why does the blood have coronary circulation? Also, what is coronary artery
disease and what usually causes it?

Give this one a try later!

Coronary arteries supply oxygenated blood to the heart muscle, and
cardiac veins drain away the blood once it has been deoxygenated.

Coronary artery disease is damage or disease in the heart's major blood
vessels.

, Coronary artery disease is caused by plaque buildup in the wall of the
arteries that supply blood to the heart

17) What happens to respiration if pH decreases? What happens to respiration if pH
increases?

Give this one a try later!

An decrease in blood pH leads to an increase in breathing rate.

1) What 4 structures make up the urinary system?

Give this one a try later!

kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.

Explain the ovarian cycle beginning at puberty with FSH secretion from the anterior
pituitary.

Give this one a try later!

,Each month, beginning at puberty, FSH (from the anterior pituitary gland)
stimulates a group of primordial follicles (~20) to begin maturing.
o Primordial Follicle = 1 oocyte surrounded by simple squamous cells
(called follicular cells).
The follicular cells begin dividing, becoming a stratified epithelium
surrounding the 1° oocyte = Primary follicle

The follicular cells continue to divide (now about 6-12 layers of cells) and
irregular, fluid-filled spaces appear between them = secondary follicle
(Only a few of the 1° follicles proceed to this step).

Maturation of the follicle takes about 10 -14 days (typically only 1- 1° follicle
reaches this stage), at which time its fluid-filled cavity creates a bulge in the
ovary surface = mature follicle or Graafian follicle
o Until now the 1 oocyte has been halted in Meiosis I.
o As the mature follicle completes its development, LH levels rise, and the 1
oocyte completes Meiosis I in the mature follicle.
o At the end of Meiosis I there is a 2 oocyte (haploid) and non-functional
polar body.
o (**Recall - the 2 oocyte enters Meiosis II but halts unless fertilized).

Ovulation occurs (due to surge in LH from anterior pituitary) as the mature
follicle wall ruptures and releases the 2 oocyte into pelvic cavity, which is
quickly grabbed by fimbriae.

The empty mature follicle collapses and develops into the corpus luteum
(yellow body).

Corpus luteum produces progesterone and estrogen which prepares the
body for pregnancy by stimulating the maturation of the uterine lining and
secretion of uterine glands.

Unless pregnancy occurs, the corpus luteum will degenerate about 12 days
after ovulation.
o Progesterone and estrogen levels fall
o The corpus luteum degenerates (into the Corpus albicans), marking end
of ovarian cycle.
o A new cycle begins with the stimulation of a new group of primordial
follicles by FSH

, 6) Be sure you understand which antigens and antibodies each of the blood types
contain in the table in your notes. Also, know which blood types can be transfused
into each of those listed blood types.

Give this one a try later!

Type A: Has only A antigen on red cells (and B antibody in the plasma)
Type B: Has only B antigen on red cells (and A antibody in the plasma)
Type AB: Has both A and B antigens on red cells (but neither A nor B
antibody in the plasma)
Type O: Has neither A nor B antigens on red cells (but both A and B
antibody are in the plasma)

19) What is the function of the SA node?

Give this one a try later!

The heart's natural pacemaker - the SA node - sends out regular electrical
impulses from the top chamber (the atrium) causing it to contract and
pump blood into the bottom chamber (the ventricle). The electrical impulse
is then conducted to the ventricles through a form of 'junction box' called
the AV node.

What is the function of testosterone in males?

Give this one a try later!

1. Aids in promoting spermatogenesis and functional maturation of sperm
2. Affects CNS - libido and related behaviors
3. Establishes and maintains secondary sex characteristics: Increased
growth of body hair, Enlargement of larynx and thickening of vocal folds,
