Service Line Development Proposal: Orthopedic Center at Trinity Community Hospital

A. Introduction

Trinity Community Hospital (TCH) is a 150-bed healthcare provider considering its options to expand

services offered to the community by adding a new service line. After an extensive strategic plan,

community needs assessment, and a five-year program analysis, the hospital can develop one of three

possible service lines: Orthopedics, Cardiology, or Oncology. This proposal recommends an Orthopedic

service line at TCH based on an analysis of demand, operational viability, and financial projections. This

recommendation is grounded in data analysis, aiming to meet the demand for orthopedic services while

ensuring long-term financial viability for the hospital.

A1. Demand Analysis

The Community Needs Assessment revealed significant demand for all three proposed service lines.

However, the greatest case for expansion is in orthopedics. Orthopedic cases are anticipated to increase

at TCH from 11,800 to 17,338 over five years, representing 46% growth. Inpatient joint and spine

procedures are expected to increase by 30%, while outpatient orthopedic procedures are projected to

grow by 350%. This exponential increase in demand offers TCH opportunities to strategically capture an

expanding market and serve a growing community in need (Grand View Research, 2019).

Demographic factors also favor establishing the orthopedic center. Currently, 13% of the service area's

population is over 65 years old, a figure expected to rise to 15% within five years. Additionally, 24% of

the population is under 18, both age groups being prone to orthopedic issues. These demographics are

prime targets for educational outreach and preventive care when launching the orthopedic service line

(Barbour et al., 2017).

From a financial perspective, the five-year projection indicates an average of $25,000 per orthopedic

surgical case, while physical therapy treatments could generate $275 each. Estimated collection rates of
