BROOKE ECK
, A1. Needs of the Community
Within the next five years, as 15% of the population ages 65, it is projected that 50% of
men and 33% of women will develop cancer during their lifetimes. This year, there were 3,200
cancer diagnoses. In the next five years, it’s estimated there could be 4,282 new cancer
diagnoses.
With the aging population, orthopedic case services are expected to increase.
Projections have currently had 11,800 cases, rising to 17,338 within the next five years.
Inpatient/outpatient joint and spine surgeries are projected to increase by 30% and 350%,
respectively.
In the next five years, there will be a high demand for cardiovascular care in the service
area. Coronary artery disease and the expected patient volume are on the rise. Forecasting
numbers would indicate an increase from 54,000 to 65,700 new cases. Projections show
diagnostic catheterizations and angioplasties grow in volume from 10,800 to 13,140 and 4,000
to 5,032, respectively. Combined, this means an almost 50% jump in new cases.
A2. Existing Resources
The Oncology Services were identified as operating at total capacity, and the equipment
needed for diagnosing and treating cancer patients cannot keep up with the growing patient
volume. Physicians, nurses, social workers, and patients have indicated that the available
services could be more cohesive and better coordinated. It has been noted that there are no
patient navigator programs at any of the sites assessed. Patient navigators are essential to
oncology departments as they assist patients with arranging transportation and coordinating
appointments and can support the patient overall.
It is evident that there are educational gaps regarding cancer prevention and education.
Preventive screening services for the most common cancers should be easily accessible
throughout the community. Additionally, there is a lack of educational health programs focusing
on lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, smoking cessation, and stress reduction.
