A. 1.
Establishing a new federal government was not challenging enough, but disagreements over how
powerful the Early Republic was caused a divide between the new leaders and their followers.
The Bill of Rights was introduced, but that still failed to resolve the differences. Partisan politics was a
result of that divide.

Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson and James Madison believed and supported in the rights of
individual states, this side of the partisan was known as the Anti-Federalists or also known as the
Democratic-Republican party, and they supported farming and agriculture. Secretary of Treasury -
Alexander Hamilton, wished for a strong central government that favored the interests of the
business community, this side of the partisan was known as the Federalists.

Two national parties were established to compete for control.

The First Party System became the history and political science model of American politics that
existed in the United States during the Early Republic years between 1792 – 1824.

B. 1.
The platform of the Whig party was made up of the remnants of the Federalist Henry Clay faction,
which supported Urban commercial development and manufacturing, following Alexander Hamilton’s
financial program and National banking. The Whig party were allies of Britain and the representation
of power and political stability.

The Democratic party rallied for the “common people” and favored slavery as this party came from
the rural farming region of the south. The Democratic party leaned on the power of the Constitution
and supported France and the French revolution.
