• Priority assessments/Prioritizing clients (address
physiological needs first)
- Order for priority of which patient needs to be seen first
or which need must be met first
- Physiological: ABCs
- Safety & Security: Can include financial security
- Love & Belonging: Emotional needs
- Esteem: Feelings towards oneself
- Self Actualization: Highest level of performance
• Focused pain assessment: Pain is subjective!! Pain is the 5th vital sign.
• Types of pain (cutaneous, neuropathic, somatic, nociceptive, acute, chronic, etc.)
- Acute pain causes increased respiratory rate w/ decrease in depth
- Pain can cause BP increase, but prolonged pain can cause decrease in BP
- Cutaneous: Arises from burning your skin such as like on a hot iron or from touching
a hot pan on the stove
- Visceral pain: Caused from deep internal disorders such as menstrual cramps, labor pains or GI infections
- Deep Somatic: Originates from the ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood
vessels and bones such as fractures or sprains
- Radiating: Starts at an origin but extends to other locations such as
a sore throat may extend to ears and head
- Referred: occurs in an area distant from the site of origin such as
pain from an MI might be felt in left arm or jaw
- Phantom: Pain that is perceived from an area that has been
surgically or traumatically removed
- Neuropathic: Results from an injury of one or more nerves where
messages regarding pain are transmitted w/o a pain stimulus occurs
- Acute: short duration, rapid onset, and associated w/ some kind of
injury
