Unit 4 Aim A

Health and safety:
There are many guidelines and legislations in place that organisations and
workplaces must follow to make sure that they are functioning in a safe
environment. Some of the followings are examples of which they should be
following:
Health and Safety at Work Act (1974): important UK rule requiring companies
to protect workers' health, safety, and welfare as well as the welfare of people
impacted by their job. Employees have a responsibility to ensure their own
safety as well as the safety of others, and employers are required to provide
safe working conditions, tools, and training. Businesses with five or more
employees must have written health and safety rules in place, and inspectors
are empowered to enforce compliance with the Act by issuing warnings or
pursuing legal action. Risk assessments are necessary to identify and reduce
workplace dangers, and manufacturers are responsible for ensuring the safety
of their equipment. (Legislations.gov.uk, 1974)
- COSHH: laws requiring businesses to evaluate and manage the dangers
associated with chemicals, fumes, dust, and biological agents in the
workplace. Employers are required to carry out risk assessments, put
control mechanisms in place to lessen exposure (such offering protective
gear or utilising safer substitutes), and guarantee that staff members are
properly trained. Workers exposed to specific compounds may need to
undergo health surveillance, and in order to comply with requirements,
records of risk assessments and management methods must be kept.
(Anon., 1989)
- Personal protective equipment at work (1992): mandate that, in cases
when workplace risks cannot be managed through other means, UK
companies furnish their employees with appropriate personal protective
equipment (PPE). PPE needs to be freely given, kept in good condition, and
often examined. Examples of PPE include helmets, gloves, and safety
shoes. Employers are responsible for making ensuring PPE fits properly
and providing instruction on how to use it. Workers are in charge of
following safety instructions and reporting any flaws with the PPE. These
rules guarantee that employees are shielded from hazards to their health
and safety at work. (HSE, n.d.)
There are many rules and regulations that organisations must comply with,
and there are different legislations that they must follow, depending on where
the organisation is. The US may have different laws on the wellbeing of
employees compared to the UK or any other country. For example, Royal Mail
is a mailing service that has many warehouses all across the UK. They have
over 157,000 employees, so they must comply strictly with the health and
safety laws that are in place as employees will be working with machineries,
and handling packages, large or small, carefully. Royal Mail have their own
health and safety policies that employees agree to follow upon hiring.
Health and Safety also needs to be taken seriously in scientific organisations,
where dangerous chemicals and equipment are being handled. For example,
if there are long working hours for lab technicians, they need to take breaks in
order to comply with Display Screen equipment (DSE) regulations. All

scientists within a lab need to wear suitable equipment to comply with the
regulations of PPE, and the lab itself must be properly ventilated to reduce
the risk of explosions and the risk of scientists to inhaling dangerous
substances as it could be a severe risk to their health. Harmful chemicals
should also have the correct labels with accordance to COSHH.
Sandwell College is an education institution with scientific facilities, which are
available to staff and students who work on STEM courses. This means that
the College must follow the regulations in order to operate as a safe
organisation. Sandwell College demonstrates their compliances with the laws
as they uphold the regulations for safety. For instance, there are multiple
visible safety signs around the building, indicating the nearest fire points,
emergency exits and emergency equipment. The College also have multiple
fire extinguishers available in case of emergencies. Fire drills also take place
regularly to ensure all students and staff know what to do and where to go in
case of a real fire emergency. There are many other organisations that do the
same thing, especially schools and colleges, however this is just one example
showing how health and safety is ensured.
The management of health and safety at Sandwell college complies with
legislation as they perform a number of tasks to ensure the safety and well-
being of staff, students and visitors in the labs. To ensure the safety,
management would conduct risk assessments regularly in all areas of the
campus to measure the risks of hazards and reduce them. This aligns with the
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which requires
employers to assess and control risks to health in the workplace.
As required my HASAWA, the college has a clear, written health and safety
policy. This policy outlines procedures that ensure a safe environment for
staff, students and visitors, and is made available for everyone in the college.
The college also ensures that staff are provided with the necessary training to
handle equipment safely, and to pass that knowledge on to students in a
learning environment. This is mainly focused on high-risk areas such as
science labs, construction courses or workshops. The training provided aligns
with the regulations set in HASAWA and Management of Health and Safety at
Work Regulations.
Sandwell college implements safe system of work to ensure that work
equipment, machinery and environments are safe and properly maintained.
For example, Sandwell college ensures fire safety, sufficient ventilation and
safe handling of substances to comply with Provision and Use of Work
Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and COSHH regulations.
The college provides a clear emergency procedure, such as fire evacuation
plans and first aid kits around the building to protect all individuals in case of
any incidents, This ensures compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire
Safety) Order 2005 and other safety legislations.
As required by law, Sandwell college has a Health and Safety representatives
and committees who consult with staff and student to ensure their safety
concerns are addressed.
