UNIDAD 6 – MODAL VERBS
CAN – COULD – SHOULD – MUST – HAVE TO – MAY – MIGHT
Los modal verbs son verbos que utilizamos para expresar capacidad, obligación, consejo,
posibilidad, permiso, etc.
1. REGLA GENERAL
Después de un modal utilizamos el verbo SIN TO y SIN -S. MODAL + VERBO
I can swim. Sé nadar.
She can drive. Ella sabe conducir.
You should study. Deberías estudiar.
He must work. Debe trabajar.
CUIDADO
She can to swim. She can swim.
He must works. He must work.
2. CAN
CAN = PODER / SABER
• CAPACIDAD
I can swim. Sé nadar // She can speak English. Ella sabe hablar inglés.
• PERMISO
Can I open the window? ¿Puedo abrir la ventana?
• PETICIÓN
Can you help me? ¿Puedes ayudarme?
• NEGATIVA
CAN'T →I can't drive. No sé conducir.
• PREGUNTA
CAN + SUJETO + VERBO? Can you swim? Yes, I can. / No, I can't.
, 3. COULD
COULD es el pasado de CAN para hablar de capacidades.
I could swim when I was five.
Sabía nadar cuando tenía cinco años.
She couldn't drive when she was 18.
No sabía conducir cuando tenía 18 años.
También utilizamos COULD para hacer peticiones más educadas:
Could you help me, please? ¿Podrías ayudarme, por favor?
Could I use your phone? ¿Podría utilizar tu teléfono?
4. SHOULD
• SHOULD = DEBERÍAS
Se utiliza principalmente para dar CONSEJOS.
You should study more. Deberías estudiar más.
You should eat more vegetables. Deberías comer más verduras.
• NEGATIVA
SHOULDN'T = NO DEBERÍAS
You shouldn't smoke. No deberías fumar.
You shouldn't go to bed so late. No deberías acostarte tan tarde.
• PREGUNTA
What should I do? ¿Qué debería hacer?
Should I call her? ¿Debería llamarla?
• TRUCO
PROBLEMA → SHOULD → CONSEJO
I'm tired.
→ You should rest.
