Question 1 : Pre- number concepts

Pre- number concepts are important as they form the basis for developing a sound sense of
number. Pre-number concepts that I will discuss are :
1. One to one correspondence
2. Comparison
3. Conservation
4. Subitising
5. Ordering

1. One to one correspondence
One to one correspondence is the most basic concept of number concept. One to one corre-
spondence is a skill that help children to count correctly. It is when a child can link a one object
to another object- example : An egg carton and plastic eggs that fit into the carton, the child is
then forced to put one egg in each hole. This can also be seen that the object is paired with
another in one to one relationship.

Here the child must
be able to see the
relationship between
the number 3 and the
three objects

2. Comparison
Comparing is a skill that gives a learner the ability to converse numbers, which is the ability to
know that the amount of something remains the same even if the arrangement changes. For
example , learners must compare objects such as hard and soft, long and short , early and late
etc. Comparing activities includes similarities and differences, more than, less than and equal.

In this illustration
the strips are
being compared
by their length.
