There is no quick recipe to answer Afrikaans comprehension questions. There is also NO right or
wrong way. That is why it is essential to look at some ideas and create your own unique recipe.
This will take practice, practice and more practice. However, be warned: Once you know how to
answer Afrikaans comprehension questions, you will ask for more and more leesbegrippe!!!
Remember to always work through examination papers from previous years.
The comprehension exercises are organised from Grade 4 to Grade 7 - don’t skip grade 4!!! The
older way to answer leesbegrippe entails reading the piece three times to make sure that you
understand what it is about before you start to answer the questions.

Remember, your aim is to create your own recipe as soon as possible. Here are some
suggestions:

Recipe 1:

1. Underline the question words.

2. Read the heading and the 1st paragraph.

3. Read question 1 and identify key words. Look for the answer in the 1st paragraph. If you cannot
find the answer in the 1st paragraph, don’t stress. Simply read the 2nd paragraph and look for
the answer.

4. Now read question 2 and look for the answer after that of question 1. If you cannot find the answer,
don’t stress. Just read question 3 and look for the answer.

5. Remember that the questions should be asked in chronological order. This means that the answer
to question 2 might be between question 1 and question 3.

Follow the above recipe to answer all the other questions.

Recipe 2:

1. Underline the question words.

2. Read the heading, the 1st paragraph and the last paragraph.

3. Read question 1 and identify key words. Look for the answer.

4. Carry on as explained above.

Recipe 3:

1. Underline the question words.

2. Read the heading and the 1st sentence of all the paragraphs.

3. Read question 1 and identify key words. Look for the answer.

4. Carry on as explained above.

, 3

Recipe 4:

1. Underline the question words.

2. Read the heading and then the whole leesbegrip.

3. Read question 1 and identify key words. Look for the answer.

4. Carry on as explained above.

REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO CREATE YOUR OWN RECIPE.

BEANTWOORDING VAN VRAE

• Moenie die vraag in jou antwoord herhaal nie. (Do not repeat the question in your answer)
• Let op na die punte - dit dui aan hoeveel feite jy moet gee. (The mark allocation will guide you)
• Beantwoord slegs die vraag. Moenie net sinne / dele oorskryf nie. (Only answer the question)
• Let op na jou taal en uiteensetting omdat dit ‘n positiewe indruk skep. (Pay attention to the lay-
out to create a positive impression)
