- Soviet would allow free elections in the land they occupied → but really only a
communist party → pushing the protection of USSR (bcuz the betrayal by Hitler)
- Divided land among the BIG THREE
- Germany is properly divided into the 4 zones: French, USA, USSR, British
- But wanted it to only be for a certain amount of time while Germany became
independent
1945: End of WW2
Truman Doctrine 1947:
- US would support countries being pressured by subjugation
- End of isolationism
- Policy of containment → considered the official declaration of war
Marshall Plan vs Molotov Plan:
- Economic plans
1948 Western zones connected:
West Germany: German Federal Republic
East Germany: German Democratic Republic
1949: NATO
There was no country that was big enough to defeat USSR by itself and was a result of the
Berlin blockade as it was seen as Soviet aggression → the military response of USA
They would fight together and provide arms & resources
1953: Berlin riots & Stalin died
Wages were frozen and people were living in terrible conditions
Kruschev came into power and introduced his policy of coexistence
1955 Warsaw Pact
USSR military alliance → as a result of NATO
1958
Kruschev’s demands → a threat of another blockade but didn’t end up happening
