RE: Research Proposal: What Influences Performance Achievement in South African
Netball Players?
Netball is the largest woman’s sport in South Africa. Furthermore, the South African
team is ranked 5th by The International Netball Federation. It was recently announced
that South Africa will be hosting the 2023 Netball World Cup. This event will positively
influence the countries economy, infrastructure, social cohesion and sport participation
resulting in health and social benefits. Considering this as well as the growth in netball
over the last decade, a need for more research on netball needs to be conducted. The
nature of the research would facilitate netball players of all levels to develop their skills
and performance achievement.
The goals of The Department of Sport and Recreation are in line with the attached
research proposal. For this reason, I hope that you will be interested in supporting the
study. Financial sponsorship as well as ethical approval will be needed before
commencement of the research.

SUMMARY
The proposed research aims to investigate the determinants of performance
achievement in South African netball players. Existing research on other sports reveals
some factors that can impact an athlete, however these may not be relevant to the South
African netball context. Thus, a paucity in this research area highlights the need for
further investigations, in this specific context. Given the growth of netball in terms of
participation as well as international success; knowledge will be beneficial to sports
psychologists, netball coaches and teams. This insight can be used to understand and
improve netball performance levels to achieve national netball success. Constructs such
as motivation, self-efficacy, mental toughness, social support and group cohesion are
considered to have a contribution to performance. Additionally, relevant theories are
addressed in the research. such as the Self-determination theory of motivation and the
Cultural Dimensions theory. A qualitative case study on a South African netball player
will investigate these ideas further in terms of netball performance. A thematic analysis
will be conducted according to the interpretative perspective. The findings will reveal the
internal and external factors that influence a netball players performance. Thus,
indicating the negative and positive influences that should be enhanced or reduced to
achieve netball success.
