Module 3.3
Critical Computing
Computers and decision making
Decision Support Systems
System designed to gather information from a wide range of sources, analyse it and
present it in summarized formats that aid in decision-making
Expert systems / Knowledge based systems
Limited, rule-based form of AI where the expertise of humans are coded into a computer
system that can take input and arrive at a rule-based decision far more quickly than
most humans can
Knowledge base: contains all the facts and rules
The inference: logic that accepts data from the user
Examples
Medical diagnosis system
Automatic pilot systems
Agricultural crop management systems
Distributed computing
System whereby resources of different computers are shared and used at the same time
to solve a single problem
Genetic research
Weather modelling
Oil exploration
Physics research
Financial modelling
