When does Nixon get elected? - ANS-1968

What is special about Nixon? - ANS-Nixon is the first republican elected after three
terms of democrats

Conservatives in America - ANS-many conservatives don't like the changes that have
been made and the liberalization and they see nixon in office as an opportunity to
change it. They argue that its not the governments job and things are to expensive.

Laos and Cambodia - ANS-The conflict expanded and bordering countries Laos and
Cambodia got involved. College kids are very angry because they are the ones that will
be drafted because of this.

Kent State University - ANS-A University in Ohio. ROTC programs to help college
students go into the military as an officer so you get paid more. In one of the protests in
1970 one of the students set an ROTC building on fire. The mayor of the town where
kent state is called in the national guard and when the students marched the next day
the national guardsmen shot at the students. 60 percent of americans want to pull out of
vietnam and peoples support for nixon falls

Zerocks Machiene - ANS-The pentagon got a zerocks, a copier that was unsecured and
someone from the records office copied 7,000 secret government documents, what was
on these pages was very upsetting.

Pentagon papers - ANS-During the early 60s the president knew Vietnam was
unwinable. LBJs advisor Robert Mckenna was continually telling LBJ America needed
to get out of Vietnam. Kennedy, LBJ, and Nixon all secretly vowed to keep fighting till
America won. The package with the papers stating this agreement were delivered the to
washington post secretly.

to her husband but he commited sucide so she was running it.

Nixons reaction to pentagon papers being published - ANS-Nixon ordered Katherine
and Ben be arrested but the supreme court rules the washington post is not guilty.

Nixons solution - ANS-Nixon drops 100,000 bombs over 72 hours. This does not work
and makes Americans even more mad.

January 1971 - ANS-Nixon goes on TV and announces his support of a treaty with north
and south vietnam and the removal of soldiers

Civil war beetween North and South Vietnam - ANS-Took America 3 years to get out of
Vietnam because North and South could not decide who would rule. On May 1st 1975
the conflict is finally resolved and North Vietnam won the country. The country was
communist and named Ho Chi Minh city.

John Mcain - ANS-Help captive in a torture facility in vietnam. When he came home he
had a career in poltice and ran for president in 2016.

Vietnam war memorial - ANS-Caused tension because it was never actually called a
war rather a conflict. It was built like a scar because it wounded Americans. It names of
all of the soldiers written on the memorial which made it more personal. It was an
acknowledgment that this was a traumatic event in american history it also broke the
stigma in some ways.

Post war problems - ANS-Many soldiers have PTSD and their are not many resources
to help at the time. In vietnam people were being put into concentration camps but they
called them "reeducation". People from vietnam fled to Cambodia which caused more
issues.

Pol Pot - ANS-Military dictator in cambodia. Pol pot thought anyone in cambodia that
has been corrupted by western ideas should be killed- this could be eyeglasses,
language, clothing, food could all get you killed. He killed over 1 million people of his
own.

New federalism - ANS-A plan that Nixon announces will give more power to state
government and will take some power away from federal government. Nixons says this
