1. Introduction:
As a social worker assigned to Kopanang High School in Tembisa, Gauteng, my role is to
guide and empower teenage boys and girls regarding the risks and advantages of using
social media. To achieve this, I propose the implementation of a group work program that
will focus on the dynamics of social media and its associated benefits and dangers. This
proposal outlines the objectives, activities, and expected outcomes of the program,
targeting students in grades 10 to 11.
2. Objectives:
The primary objectives of the group work program are as follows:
2.1. To educate and raise awareness among teenagers about the dangers and benefits of
social media usage:
One of the main objectives of the group work program is to provide students with
information about the potential risks and advantages of using social media. Through
educational sessions and discussions, students will learn about issues such as online
privacy, cyberbullying, digital footprints, and the impact of social media on mental health.
By increasing their awareness, students can make more informed decisions about their
online activities and understand the potential consequences of their actions.
2.2. To enhance the digital literacy skills of students, enabling them to make informed
decisions while using social media:
Digital literacy is crucial in today's technology-driven world. This objective focuses on
equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate social media platforms
responsibly. Students will learn about evaluating online information, identifying reliable
sources, distinguishing between credible and misleading content, and understanding the
implications of their online actions. By enhancing their digital literacy skills, students will be
empowered to make informed decisions, protect their online identities, and engage
responsibly with social media platforms.
2.3. To foster critical thinking and responsible behavior online:
Critical thinking is essential when consuming and interacting with online content. This
objective aims to develop students' critical thinking skills, enabling them to analyze,
evaluate, and question information encountered on social media. They will learn to
recognize biases, detect misinformation, and consider the potential consequences of
sharing or engaging with certain content. By fostering critical thinking, students will
develop the ability to make responsible decisions and contribute positively to online
discussions and communities.
