Question 1.1
Define the term “adolescence” making sure to explain the different phases of
this period (i.e. physical, cognitive and social).
Adolescence is the transitional period between childhood and adulthood, typically
occurring between the ages of 10 and 19 years old. This period is characterized by
various changes in physical, cognitive, and social development.
The physical changes in adolescence include the onset of puberty, which is marked
by the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as breast
development, facial hair growth, and menstruation in girls. Cognitive changes in
adolescence involve the development of abstract thinking, logical reasoning, and
problem-solving abilities. Lastly, social changes in adolescence are marked by the
increased desire for independence, self-expression, and the formation of close
relationships with peers.
The physical changes of adolescence include rapid growth and development of the
body, including changes in hormones that lead to sexual maturation. This often
results in a period of awkwardness and self-consciousness as adolescents adjust to
their changing bodies.
Cognitive changes in adolescence are marked by the development of abstract
reasoning skills, the ability to think logically, and the capacity for more complex
thought processes. Adolescents become increasingly capable of analysing and
evaluating information, making decisions based on logic and reason, and
considering the perspectives of others.
Social changes in adolescence involve a shift in relationships with peers and family
members. Adolescents are often more focused on peer relationships and may
experience heightened emotions and increased sensitivity to social cues. They may
also experience conflicts with parents and authority figures as they seek greater
independence and autonomy.
The phases of adolescence can be broadly categorized into early adolescence (ages
10-14), middle adolescence (ages 15-17), and late adolescence (ages 18-21).
