WHAT IS A DRAINAGE BASIN?
• A drainage basin is an area that is drained by a river and its tributaries,
separated by a high lying area

TERM DEFINITION
DRAINAGE An area that is drained by a river and its tributaries, separated
BASIN by a high lying area
CATCHMENT An area that is drained by a river and its tributaries, separated
AREA by a high lying area and including underground flow
RIVER SYSTEM The entire natural water system in a drainage basin made of
many individual stream channels that join to form one main
stream
WATERSHED A high lying area that separated different drainage basins
Minor watershed- a smaller high lying area within a drainage
basin (also known as a =n interfluve/ spur)
NOTE- the Drakensberg mountains in South Africa are a major
watershed that separate South Africa into the east that
receives optimal rainfall and the drier west

TRIBUTARY A smaller stream that flows into a larger stream
DISTRIBUTARY A larger stream that flows into smaller streams
RIVER MOUTH Where a river enters the sea
SOURCE Where a river rises or begins
CONFLUENCE The point at which two tributaries or streams join
SURFACE RUN- Rainfall water that moves over the land surface after the
OFF ground has absorbed its maximum capacity of water
GROUNDWATER Water held underground in the soil or in the pores of rocks
beneath the earth’s surface
