If we explore further back, we will find “The Homophile Movement” which was formed around the 1950’s. A movement seeking unification withing the gay community that provided resources, education and other forms of support to many. In the late 1960’s, the Gay Liberation Movement picked up pace. To gain legal rights, societal and political acceptance, and eliminate internalized homophobia from continuing to affect the lives of the LGBTQIA community. On the other side of history, In the 1980’s in the state of Colorado concerned citizens formed the group called “Colorado for Family Values”, this group sought out to protect “the traditional family” and eliminate and protection of homosexuals in the antidiscrimination laws and policies in the state of Colorado. It is important to understand the way that society has affected the lives of this community since the beginning of time to grasp in its totality how that has led to the overrepresentation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Allies in the U.S criminal justice system.
